Originally from Tennessee, Kaelum Kalista has been offering a full Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu program for adults and young people in Bavaro since 2010.
His idea to open up a school in the area came from an interest to give back to the community, helping kids stay off the streets and out of trouble by sharing his art. “Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is difficult, and if anyone can conquer something as difficult as this, they can conquer anything!”
In his efforts to help build a strong and vibrant community, he offers students the option to pay what they can; it is free of charge to anyone who cannot pay. His support comes from donations, sponsors and sales of uniforms to tourists who come to the area to train.
Women can attend FREE of charge
Classes are free of charge for all women and girls. Kaelum provides a foundation for effective self-defense and good conditioning, and hopes to help women to develop the mental and physical tools they need to stay in shape, along with teaching effective ways to evade, neutralize and overcome an attacker if necessary.
