Punta Cana has a lot to offer local residents, but for some services a trip to Santo Domingo is needed. Mary Baron Garcia and Natalia Marcela Gonzalez recently moved to the area from Columbia to meet the demand for effective speech therapy.
A speech therapist works to assess and treat language, speech and communication problems among children, adolescents and adults. Mary and Natalia both have extensive experience as speech therapists, and both see the need for effective treatment in the region.
Mary has over twenty years of experience in the health sector, and ten years as an educationalist. “My career has given me the opportunity to work with families and communities in many places, helping children and adults with various language disorders,” says Mary. “For many children with speech problems, school can be particularly difficult, especially as most schools teach students to speak in a standardized or ‘official’ manner.”
Natalia adds that she and Mary are currently helping children with Down Syndrome, autism, cerebral palsy, cognitive impairment, hyperactivity, and attention deficit disorder, all of which can impair a child’s ability to learn. Mary and Natalia also offer individualized therapeutic intervention for children with aural comprehensive difficulties.
As well as helping individuals, the speech therapists also offer training for teachers and parents to help them understand that the management of language is a fundamental tool in growth and development.
